As mentioned in our last news update we had spawning turbot broodstock. It took some weeks to learn how to work with the fish in a good proper way. End of July we had a breaktrough with two good spawns. We obtained a lot of good fertilized eggs in a couple of days. These eggs were incubated in our system and developed very well. After 6 days the eggs were hatched. We placed them in our larvae systems. They received algae, rotifers, artemia and copepods. At the moment the larvae are in the...
Spring 2018 we did a small experiment on fish feed. In the project 'Broedhuis paling en tarbot: optimaal resultaat door kennisdeling' we worked together with TEMA on feed for (broodstock) turbot. It is difficult to test feed on broodstock, because it will take a lot of time te see any effect. So as a pre-study we used small turbot and we tested the effect of razor clams and shrimp shells on growth in a not-scientific test. First we had to try was whether the razors and the shrimp shells can be...
At the start of June we found the first females with thick bellies. This is a good indication that the fish are almost ready for spawning. During June the behaviour of the fish changed. Normally turbot is a very quiet and easy fish. However in spawning season they become very active. The fish is swimming around the tank; males and females close to each other. Unfortunately turbot doesn't release eggs and sperm in the water in captivity. So we need to check the fish every 2 - 3 days on eggs and...
Sole is producing eggs in this spring season. Every couple of days we obtain eggs. We place the eggs in our special developed system and after 4 days the first little soles are hatched. We start feeding them rotifers, grown on live algae. Now the first sole larvae starts eating on artemia. The belly of the larva is full with artemia nauplii. You can see this in the video. The belly is completely orange.
The egg incubation room is finished today. With dedicated hard work, we are just in time for the sole spawning season. In the coming weeks, we hope to produce our first Solea solea juveniles at Fry Marine.

The new incubation room is under construction! The coming days the hatching system will be ready for testing. We have to prepare everything in the next two weeks, because the sole reproduction season is ahead. The first eggs are already released, so are just in time. For us, this is the first time to work with Solea solea larvae. In research projects in the previous years we obtained a lot of knowledge. Now in this larger scale experiments we have to bring this knowledge into practice. We have...
This is a new page on the Fry Marine website! We are always developing and working on several projects, as you can see on the research page. When we have something interesting to publish, like project milestones, it will be published in this section.
